The cat fountain vets actually recommend.

  • Stainless steel is the only material I recommend. Plastic harbors bacteria no matter how well you clean it.
  • Moving water isn't a luxury for cats, it's how they're wired to drink. It imitates the wild and cats love it.
  • This is the fountain I tell new male cat owners to get first. Kidney diseases can affects all cats, but occurs nearly 3 times more for male cats.
  • I recommend it because it's one less health risk to worry about and it's super easy to maintain.

Why Cats Actually Drink From It.

It's not magic. It's biology.

Moving Water Triggers Trust

Cats evolved to distrust still water — in the wild it signals contamination. Continuously flowing water triggers an ancient instinct to drink. It's not a preference. It's hardwired.

Filtration That Actually Works

Multi-stage activated carbon removes odor, chlorine, and impurities from every drop. The difference isn't just cleaner water — it's water that smells right to her.

Stays Clean Between Refills

Stainless steel doesn't grow the slimy pink film that coats plastic fountains. The water stays fresh and the surface stays clean — so what your cat drinks actually looks and smells like clean water.

Frequently asked questions

Is stainless steel actually better than plastic or ceramic?

Significantly. Plastic develops microscopic scratches over time that harbor bacteria — bacteria your cat then drinks. 304 food-grade stainless steel has a non-porous surface that stays hygienic, resists rust, and is genuinely dishwasher safe. It also doesn't absorb odors or leach chemicals into the water the way plastic can over time.

My last fountain grew that pink slime — why won't this one?

That pink slime is biofilm — a layer of bacteria that builds up on surfaces in standing or moving water. The reason it took over your old fountain is the plastic: plastic is soft and porous, so bacteria work their way into tiny scratches and pores and stay there, no matter how hard you scrub.

Stainless steel is the opposite — it's a hard, non-porous surface with nowhere for bacteria to dig in, so it blocks up to 99% of bacteria and the slime never gets the same foothold. You'll still want to rinse it and swap the filter regularly (every surface needs basic cleaning), but you won't be fighting that slimy pink film every week like you were with plastic.

How loud is the pump — will it annoy me or scare my cat?

Near-silent. The pump is designed specifically so it won't disturb you or your cat. Noise is one of the main reasons cats reject fountains — we built around that. Most owners say they forget it's even running.

Is it hard to clean?

Straightforward. The bowl and main basin are dishwasher safe — just pull them out and run them through. The pump unit should be rinsed and wiped by hand, which takes under a minute and keeps the motor running properly long term.

We recommend a full clean alongside your monthly filter change. Once you've done it once it becomes second nature.

How often do I change the filter and how much does that cost?

We recommend replacing the filter every 30 days for best results. Replacement filters are available in our store as a 8-pack. A clean filter is what keeps the water tasting fresh — it's the one maintenance step that actually matters.

My cat ignores everything new — will he actually use this?

Most cats transition within a few days. The flowing water triggers a natural instinct — cats are hardwired to trust moving water over still water. That said, if your cat needs time, place the fountain near her existing bowl initially and let her investigate on her own terms. Don't force it.

Why Carl & Earl over other fountains?

Most pet fountains are made from plastic. Plastic develops microscopic scratches over time that harbor bacteria — bacteria your cat then drinks from every day. It absorbs odors, degrades with repeated cleaning, and often ends up being replaced within a year anyway.

Carl & Earl is 304 food-grade stainless steel. Non-porous, rust-resistant, and genuinely built to last. Combined with multi-stage carbon filtration and a near-silent pump, it's the difference between a fountain that looks good on day one and one that's still performing two years later.

What if it leaks?

It won't under normal use. If you ever experience any issue with your fountain, our 2 year warranty covers it. Reach out and we'll make it right.

What if my cat doesn't like it?

We offer 60 day returns. If your cat genuinely won't use it within 60 days, return it. We're confident enough in the product to make that offer because it almost never happens — but the option is there if you need it.
